Hogle Zoo Doesn’t Monkey Around When It Comes to Social Media
April 27, 2009 | by Jyl Johnson Pattee
Hogle Zoo isn’t wasting any time diving right into social media. With a Twitter account, a Facebook page, a YouTube group, mentions on popular Utah sites like Utah Mamas and Utah Bubble, and membership in the Social Media Club of Salt Lake City, it has gained significant momentum, not to mention followers and fans, in a short time.
Using social media to enhance traditional print or broadcast advertising mediums, the Hogle Zoo conveys messages about conservation and promoting on-grounds efforts as well as communicates about events and animals.
The Zoo experienced tremendous success with a recent social media campaign for its Fairy “Tails” Storytelling event in March. It tweeted out reminders the day of the event in hopes of filling open slots. These places were immediately filled by people who saw the reminders on Twitter.
“The beauty of using social media for a non-profit organization such as ours,” comments Holly Braithwaite “is that our mission can still be easily upheld, while making it easy for visitors to learn about what’s going on with the click of a mouse!”
