Report of inaugural Social Media Club of Salt Lake City meeting
January 16, 2009 | by Pete Codella, APR
It’s been 24 hours since we gathered in Salt Lake City as social media evangelists for the first Social Media Club meeting.
That’s right, Chris Heuer. Evangelists, not missionaries. Perhaps you’ll agree that there’s a slight difference.
What we expected to be like a small, intimate family gathering, turned out to be like a huge party with family, friends and all the neighbors. What a rush!
By official estimates there were about 75 people in attendance.
Many of those who attended have tweeted, blogged and posted photos from the experience.
SMC of SLC has posted photos on its own Flickr page and created a group page. Feel free to check them out and add your photos to the group. Also add your photos to the Social Media Club pool.
Chris Heuer, co-founder of Social Media Club posted a podcast of his portion of the program.
We took some video and will get that edited and posted online in the near future.
Huge thanks go out to The Summit Group for lending us their facility to kick things off. They even co-sponsored the evening’s refreshments — soft drinks and pizza. (We do believe that plenty of beer was also consumed by those who attended, just not at The Summit Group and not during our studious meeting.)
Business Wire also sponsored the evening’s refreshments and their very own Malcolm Atherton played an instrumental role in the establishment of our chapter, bringing with him a great deal of experience from the SMC Phoenix chapter.
While each of the six founders went to great lengths to ensure the event was a success, it simply would not have been without the amazing support of the social media community in Salt Lake City. And after last night, we’re so optimistic about the future of SMC of SLC!
Thank you for being flexible, literally, as some of you had to cram into tight spaces in the conference room to hear from Social Media Club co-founder Chris Heuer.
Thanks to Chris for being patient as we worked out the bugs with our Skype connection.
Thanks to Jyl Pattee for her preparation and facilitation of our breakout groups and discussion of using social media to solve problems. Kudos to all!
We, the founders of SMC of SLC, hope everyone felt the evening was beneficial. We hope all of us can catch the vision of the Social Media Club, and “If you get it, share it!”
In that vein, we’ll be in a much larger space for our Feb. 19 social media panel. We’d love to have continued and increased participation from all industries and niches, from people in all walks of life.
Social media is open to anyone, as is SMC of SLC. Please spread the word!
As of this writing we have 124 Facebook group members, 10 members on LinkedIn, and about 100 members on our GroupList.us membership list (which is still, unfortunately, offline).
The one thing we neglected to do at last night’s event was award the door prizes. We can’t believe all of you let us forget that! The leadership team will meet on Tuesday afternoon and will randomly select door prize winners from those who signed-in (see, it IS important to sign-in). If you’re a winner, you will be notified.
Thank you to The Melting Pot and XMission for graciously providing us with the door prize giveaways.
If you’d like to provide door prizes for future events, host events, provide refreshments, help with publicity — you name it — please get in touch with us.

Pete, this was a great event, and I am so glad I was able to attend and meet so many of the people I have been tweeting with over the last few months.
I am looking forward to the next event in February.
