The First Year of SMCSLC for Me

November 19, 2009 | by Scott Duehlmeier

You all rule! #justsayin

You all rule! #justsayin

I sat down tonight to the computer four tasks to do before I went to bed:

1- Check-in on Twitter

2- Check-in on FaceBook

3- Check my FriendFeed

4- Look over the SMCSLC Blog

It was when I logged into SMCSLC.org I realized something…2009 is rapidly ending. It was about a year ago that I sat around a table at The Summit Group with Jyl, Pete, Hilarye, Malcolm and Sarah talking about starting this thing called SMCSLC. We all had a vision of what this could become, and I for one am so happy with what ‘WE’ (anyone who has ever attended an SMCSLC meeting, gone to lunch/breakfast/dinner with someone they didn’t know before, retweeted something you hadn’t ever thought of before, etc. etc. etc.) have accomplished this year.

With what I do, I am able to travel quite a bit, and I’ve had the opportunity to visit and chat with members of different social media clubs across the country. I have a sense of pride whenever I tell about the things we have going with SMCSLC, and I always receive really nice compliments about our little club.

It has truly been my pleasure to get to know many of you, and I hope that I can get to know many more (if I say the word many anymore, you can call me Commandant Eric Lassard…50 points to the person who can tell me the movie reference) of you. I can honestly say that some of my greatest friends have come from SMCSLC.

So let me ask you, what has been your favorite memory of SMCSLC this year?

I’m already looking forward to 2010!

Scott – you travelin’ man. We missed you at the USMAs. But a man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do – like earn a living.

I think my favorite SMCSLC memory of 2009 is our very first meeting at The Summit Group. We hoped to get 25-30 people and ended up with close to 80 and completely outgrowing the space in which we had to meet w/in the first 15 minutes or so.

Of course, I have to add to that the feeling of concluding the world’s first Social Media Club sponsored social media awards program – the Utah Social Media Awards – on Nov. 6. That was a great feeling.

We accomplished so much as a chapter this year. It has been a great ride!

  2. Antonio Lima, APR

I’m not the most active member, although I’ve enjoyed every activity that I’ve been able to attend this year. My favorite memory – like Pete’s previous post – was the initial meeting. The room was electric. Everybody was so excited to get this started. I haven’t seen that much energy at a club/association event in my entire life. What’s been equally impressive is that energy still exists in the club. Pretty cool!

I’m only months-new to SMCSLC, but my favorite memories include all the board interaction I’ve been privy to since volunteering to help out with the promotions committee. The current board is comprised of such interesting people — with incredible passion for creating something awesome with this club. On a personal note, I am happy to have found the club so quickly after my arrival in Salt Lake City, as, like Scott, I have made some great friends via SMCSLC. I look forward to contributing to the board and club in 2010. I can’t wait to see what we’re all going to accomplish!

A side note: I tip my hat to Pete Codella’s stellar leadership of the club this first year. Such an awesome, awesome guy! ;-)

As a newer kid on the block,I first want to say thanks to all those that put in the hours to make it what it is.

I have thoroughly enjoyed every event I Have attended (learned lots), met lots of great folks.

I am really excited about what next year brings.

    Thanks Guys

I, too, was at the first meeting and there was a great vibe in the room! My other memory is a corny one: I had been on Twitter, but not really tweeting much for a few months, when, at the 2nd or 3rd meeting there was a live feed of tweets and it was kinda cool to see my tweet scroll through. ha ha. Hundreds of tweets later, that is lame, but I can admit it: it felt cool at the time! :)
